We discussed Korihor and Alma 30 in Gospel Doctrine today. Here is my summary of the ten foundational claims of Korihor. It is interesting that essentially none of the claims of the New Atheists are, in fact, “new”.

/ July 22, 2012I have always found the discussion with Korihor in the Book Of Mormon one of the more interesting sections to me. It describes how an atheist or agnostic views the world as they see it, and the statements made by Korihor mirror many of those made today by like minded individuals. How did a simple farmer in the early 1800′s with a minimal education manage to come up with such a concept about atheism and explain it so well in the book that it is still relevant and pertinent today?

/ July 22, 2012The irony of Korihor’s remarks kick in quickly with ,“ye cannot know things which ye do not see”, while announcing there is no God or Christ.

/ July 23, 2012One of the things that really stood out to me this time through was the number of items connecting his philosophy with his own pride, and the pride of his followers: for instance, verses 18, 23, and 25 with references to (something like) “lifting ones head up.” He wants his followers to not only sin, but be proud of their sinful actions, and thrust them in the face of others, to”look up with boldness” and “not be brought down according to thy words” in humility. In my mind, this is part of the why, in the end, even though he knows/knew that these things are not true, he cannot deny them- his pride won’t let him admit he’s made a mistake or taught untruth, and thus the only way forward is to “rejoice” or be proud of his/others sins.
